It is usually thought that meekness refers to weakness, whereas in reality, it refers to "controlled strength." The meek individual is one who is soft-spoken, peaceful, gentle, tolerant, and not quick to anger. In our textbook, pages 127, the characteristics of meek people show that they "find... a balance between too much anger and too little anger". It is suggested that the meek are people who have the virtue of controlling their rage in order to strike a balance that prevents them from acting out of uncontrolled rage, yet at the same time, not being totally without it. Thus, meekness is not a weakness.
- Contemporary Figure : Rosa Parks
The act of meekness portrayed by Rosa Parks was very strong because she was able to show meekness and stubbornness at the same time when she was involved in the fight for civil rights. The meekness that she demonstrated did not involve screaming or violence. Rather, Rosa Parks had a lot of internal strength, which helped her to ignite the movement towards equality. Talking about the day that changed history, Rosa Parks said, "I did not get on the bus to get arrested. I got on the bus to go home."
- Personal Application:
A high school student practicing meekness may exercise self-control while dealing with frustrating experiences. For example, if one finds that a classmate who is working in a group is not carrying out his or her part of the responsibility, then rather than yelling at the classmate or screaming at the teacher, I may calmly address the classmate.
