While peacemakers refrain from participating in conflict, they go further than that by actively working towards reconciling people’s differences, mending broken relations, and creating bridges of harmony. This beatitude calls for tremendous bravery as peacemakers find themselves in tough situations in order to foster peace. According to our course book, on pages 128, we learn that shalom, the Hebrew concept of peace, refers to the idea of helping others experience everything life can provide. It is also stated that peace is more than the absence of war because peace implies justice and Christian love. To create peace one must "settle disputes, root out violence, forgive, defend the innocent, and show compassion"(pg 128).
- Contemporary Figure : Malala Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai stands out as an excellent contemporary peacemaker who displays incredible courage. Even after being attacked by the Taliban for speaking out about girls' access to education, Malala embraced the spirit of peace on a worldwide scale instead of responding with hate. According to her, the most powerful instrument to put an end to global conflict and violence is education, and she says, "With guns you can kill terrorists, with education you can kill terrorism".
- Personal Application:
One can act like a peacemaker as a high school student simply by intervening to prevent the spread of rumors and gossip. In case my peers decide to start spreading false information about another person either among themselves or through group messages, I can step in to calm down the situation and encourage mutual respect.
